Good Old Matthew

I've been meaning to write about the political trauma in this country. I certainly live it everyday, and have been as active as I can manage without losing my mind.

I am heartened by the outpouring of public support fighting to end the cruel policy of stealing children from their parents at the Texas/Mexico border. I have even learned a new bible quote (is that what you call them?) that is now my favorite. I use it to shut down hateful, heartless, soulless trolls: Matthew 25:31:46.

You know things are getting complicated when a heathen agnostic like me starts reading the bible to get clear on what is and what is not Christ-like. But I was raised pre-Vatican II Catholic. That stuff (the golden rule, morality, aversion to sin) never really goes away. At least it never went away for me. What I don't understand is why so many Fox News Christians don't follow the teachings of Christ? What's that all about? It is almost like they are following the anti-Christ, ya know? At any rate, they certainly are giving Christianity a bad name. Oh well, their choice.

Here's a fun meme, ha! Feel free to download and share it widely. And then vote as if your immortal soul depended on it come November.  See, I can still talk that talk!

  1. I'm just sick over what's going on at our border. I can't bring myself to write about it on my blog but it's on my mind every single day. This country is in a bad, bad place.

    1. I totally agree. It was so hard to write this today because I am overcome with emotional pain and compassion for these families, who just want a better life.

  2. I am a broken hearted Christian.

How, how did we get to this place? By using verses that Jesus didn't say. By upholding Old Testament, patriarchal, slavery ridden, murdering crap and saying that's Jesus.

I am embarrassed to be connected with it.

    1. Join the Poor People's Campaign on Facebook. Or the related site, Repairers of the Breach. If there is a God, they are doing his/her work.

    2. There's this guy on twitter who is an ex pastor and his handle is @edrowell (Keepin' it real with Uncle Ed). He tweeted the best thing a while back: "An old couple came to the door stumping for a GOP gubernatorial candidate. They know i'm a retired pastor so they assumed I was one of them. I finally interrupted and said "just so you know, I'm a Jesus Christian, not a Fox News Christian." Stunned they walked away speechless."

I think Jesus Christians need to take back the moral imperative.

    1. Good to know, Steve. Are you able to vote from afar in November? If so, please vote for Bill Nelson for Senate and whoever wins the Dem primary for Florida Governor. Florida can be flipped blue.

  5. It's hard to be civil about this. Rage is an interesting emotion that cannot consume us while we solve this problem.

    1. We don't have the luxury of expressing rage right now. Better to let it motivate us to action.

  6. You're right, even if you fall away from the church all that 'stuff' has a permanent room in your head. When he said 'Suffer the little children....." he didn't mean "make them suffer..."

    1. Well said. And yes, I will forever be "culturally" Catholic, even if I no longer practice. The dogma never leaves.

  7. And now the FOOL wants us to conquer space. When man began to enter into space in the fifties and sixties we agreed to allow it to be neutral territory. Children being held hostage as a bargaining chip to induce us to pay for that ludicrous wall is beyond any horrible thing I can think of.

  8. Every day, every week, every month seems worse than the one before. There will never be a more important vote than the one we make in November. However, 45 doesn’t listen to congress and acts on his own as Supreme Ruler. Hopefully, with some power, we can slow him down and at least stop him and Congress from appointing more right wing judges.

    1. Yes, the judges are the ones we will have to live with for decades.

  9. Alas, he isn't a moron. He has the common touch combined with a viewpoint shared by businessmen who have made money by screwing others. Many would give their eyeteeth for those two qualities.

Remember that other salutary quote made many decades ago: "What's good for General Motors is good for the USA." DT has merely brought it up to date. Triumphant from his meeting with Kim he alluded gleefully to the money the treaty might save. So narrow-minded he set this aim higher than the possibility of avoiding post-nuclear desolation.

I am an atheist (and hardening all the time) but it would be inhumane to deny the essential goodness of some of the principles of the Sermon of the Mount. But what irritates me is the selective way many use the Bible. Luke (18-11. Wowee! - the first time I've done chapter and verse.) quotes the Pharisee who says: "God, I thank Thee that I am not as other men." Because it's in the Bible there are those capable of claiming it justifies plutocracy.

A bit like a heroin addict who says: "I shoot up because the Constitution encourages me to do so."

    1. I'm not sure how to answer this. The things going on in the U.S. right now are so horrendous that I am unable to step back and banter about it. You are right about him not being a moron, though. He is a dangerous person, with few scruples.

  10. The Bible has been used to justify everything from rape to slavery to polygamy to sexism to racism and on and on. Strangely though, those who profess to be Christian rarely abide by the most simple tenet of the Gospel which is the foundation of their religion - love one another.

I wish I believed in hell because there are quite a few of our current "leaders" who I would like to burn there.

  11. I love the quote in one of your response comments about the pastor "I'm Jesus Christian, not a Fox News Christian." That summarizes it so well. I am an atheist, so all of this just knocks me out on every level. I hope things change in November.

  12. Desperate times call for desperate measures etc.
You need all you can get and it gladens my heart to know that you are doing all this. Bible quotes and all.

Last week I killed several flies with the gideon bible we found in our hotel room.
