The anger of Cúchulainn

Now THIS is angry:

When Cuchulain went into battle, he would go into a frenzy. His cry alone would kill a hundred warriors from fright. His physical appearance—namely, that of a handsome man—changed completely. Cuchulain's hair stood on end, one of his eyes bulged out while the other disappeared in his head, his legs and feet turned to face backward, his muscles swelled, and a column of blood spurted up from his head. His body became so hot that it could melt snow.

The Táin. Cúchulainn in warp-spasm is a 1969 work by Louis le Brocquy. It is not currently on display in IMMA. It is part of the IMMA Permanent Collection.

  1. I've felt like that occasionally, although thankfully it was all internal.

    1. Ha! I love the mythopoetic take on how anger transforms us.

  2. Cuchulainn was a fearsome warrior. Several times he was the savior of Ireland.

  3. I think some of us have a tendency to inner-channel Cuchulain from time to time. I didn't know of this myth. Thank you for that.

  6. Ah yes. I have two nephews in Ireland who impersonated Cuchulain on a regular basis up to age 10.

  7. There does appear to be a lot of rage in people lately! My daughter was grocery shopping with her mask on and nicely asked a man behind her to please step back as he was getting too close and he wasn't wearing a mask. He called her a communist and moved closer! She said she would dial 911 if he didn't move back and so he did. But really, what happened to respect and politeness! Geez!

  9. Too hard to spell, he'll never enjoy public acceptance. Might one of his descendants have a moderately important job on your side of the pond?
