Taking a few minute break from angst and activism...
T and I went to Leu Gardens in Orlando yesterday. There are so many "early spring" Florida style flowers in bloom right now, including any number of different kinds of bromeliads. Here are a few for your viewing pleasure:
Bromeliads really are practically insane plants and flowers. I guess that is why I love them. I have a couple camellia photos that are pretty nice, too. Maybe tomorrow.
Oh my. They are magnificent.
ReplyDeleteI think so, too!
DeleteThe first time I saw a bromeliad I was astounded. Someone had sent one to our transcription department at the hospital. A work of art! Sweet to know that you can visit so many of them in one place. Thank you for a window into early spring in Florida!
ReplyDeleteWe have about 4 different kinds in our yard. Only one is in bloom, the others are on their way, though.
DeleteThey are beautiful. I have had some luck growing them in my house. Then I ran out of luck.
ReplyDeleteHa! I can't imagine what they might need growing in a house. They are very odd plants.
DeleteSuch variety! I think I remember that my daughter once had some bromeliads that just hung on the wall anchored to a little piece of wood. You only had to mist them every once in awhile. But I don't remember them flowering. Do you know, if they just a different kind of the same family?
ReplyDeleteThis is just the tip of the iceberg - there are so many different kinds. Most of them flower, although I have one in the back yard that has been there for 3 years now and has never done so - but I think this might be the year.
DeleteGardening for me is the terrifying destiny that old age might well confer. VR at least has theories about our garden; I don't even have that form of comfort, seeing only a series of repetitive and body-stretching tasks involving an intractable medium Technically we employ a gardener but we made the mistake of employing an undoubted enthusiast neighbour who is the same age as us. Thus he has now succumbed to the same physical inadequacies we now suffer from.
ReplyDeleteWe need another gardener but are worried that our present, non-functioning artisan might take umbrage at being replaced. He is a deacon at the local Baptist church which may or may not be significant.
Thus I hope you won't be offended if my comments about your garden are either non-existent or, at best, merely inoffensive. If it's any compensation I would never, in a thousand years, have thought that bromeliad was a horticultural genus. Rather a swamp-wandering reptile.
I feel terrible about this. You have shown yourself a willing contributor to Tone Deaf and adaptable to a number of subjects which cannot have been congenial. I have let you down.
You made my day describing bromeliads as swamp-wandering reptiles. Indeed, all the best Florida plants ARE. Swamp is the natural state in this part of Florida.
DeleteBy the way, my lower back is killing me this week because I spent too much time gardening.
Beautiful, I love bromeliads. We'll have to wait at least another four months before the first blossoms.
ReplyDeleteGives you something to look forward to, right? Are yours in your house?
DeleteRight now the house is overcrowded with potted plants of all sorts as we are experiencing an unusual *arctic* frost, aka fecking freezing, for at least another week.
DeleteI feel like an intensive care nurse.
Terrific piece on October 10, 2015. It caught my eye because it was one of three posts described as "ex-catholic" in your list of labels. I have now changed my mind about that sketch attached to your profile; uncertainty predominates but this is not a characteristic I associate with your posts. Certainly not this one.
ReplyDeleteI notice (For the first time) you have a sidebar called Some Posts I'm Proud of. The Oct 15 post should be among them and I'm just about to check... It isn't. Please rectify this immediately.
Wow, you actually read an old post of mine. Thank you. Your reward is that I will follow your advice and add it to the favorites.
DeleteYes, I chose that cartoon of me because I thought it conveyed an "are you kidding me?" sensibility. Because you have never been a teen aged girl, you probably don't know about the eye roll technique. It is the non verbal version of "Whatever!" The only things I'm uncertain about are 1. is there an afterlife, and 2. what to order when I go out to a restaurant.
They look like lovely plants, alas, they would only be grown indoors here. I'm looking forward to the spring and the snow melt. It's still effing cold here.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that. Hard time of the year up north, I remember. Time to start leafing through seed catalogues! I saw you left the Crones of Anarchy group - good call. They do not go high...
DeleteBeautiful flowers and a wonderful distraction from the times we are living in. Thank you for that.
ReplyDeleteThere is always joy someplace. Why not let it be here?
