I was an employee of Cornell University for nearly 40 years.
Cornell has it's own "police force." We were told to call them if there was an issue, not the Ithaca police. The Cornell public safety officers work for Cornell, if you know what I mean. Certainly in the case of the Jane Doe who was gang raped at a fraternity house in 2024, the summary report the Cornell officer shared with the local police didn't include the whole story. Critical information provided by the victim was not shared with the local district attorney. Why? Well, the modus operandi at Cornell is to "protect Cornell's reputation first and foremost."
Now there is an international scandal at Cornell rivaling the "MeToo" movement. Why am I not surprised?
I take my hat off to those amazing young journalists at the (independent) student run newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun. They didn't let this go.
The first thing I hear when a rape case is reported some time after the rape occurred is :Why didn't she report it to the police sooner. This is one instance why. I remember reading about a teenager who did report the rape. After the trial the judge blamed her because she was dressed provocatively (in other words she asked for it). She was wearing a sweat suit after gym class at the time. In another case the man could not be blamed because the victim seduced him. She was 6 months yes months old. Girls were trained that it was their fault if they were raped. In my case I didn't report it even to my parents because it was my best friend's boyfriend. I didn't want to lose my friend. I hope the Cornell case shows that there is never a valid reason to sexually assault another person.
ReplyDeleteShe reported it within 2 weeks of it happening. They are reopening the case, because the damning information wasn't shared by Cornell with the Ithaca Police. It was a cover up.
DeleteEntitled people protecting entitled men. I hope their dicks rot and fall off.
ReplyDeletehahahaha! Thanks for the laugh.
DeleteI live in Auburn Alabama. The University is pretty much the whole town, government and all. The University sweeps a lot of things under the rug. It's not just Cornell. I'm glad it's all coming out, but we need to do more than just lip service to ending the "boys will be boys" mentality.
ReplyDeleteSo true.
DeleteHearing about this assault over the last few days...sickening... and the insane so-called consequences...appalling... and yet "a tale as old as time" of men trained to be "men" by predators, abusers, and rapists (or its monetized rebrand: the "manosphere.") Thank you for sharing the very interesting personal insight because ever bit of public outrage compounded is the only reason there might be some justice for these creeps after all (unlike the Epstein situation, barf).
ReplyDeleteDon't even get me started on the Epstein Files. Someday justice WILL be served there.
DeleteI hope those Cornell rapists never know a moment of peace for the rest of their sorry lives. And for the love of God, WHY do we still have fraternities? Rapes and hazing deaths and entitled assholes, all of them.
ReplyDeleteWhy indeed? What do they do to make the world a better place?
DeleteIt's not just men, either, who espouse the attitude that a woman is asking for it if she isn't dressed a certain way. I've heard an elderly local woman say it; thankfully she had no sons to teach it to. -Kate
ReplyDeletePeople can be so stupid.
DeleteHuge Kudo's to the student journalists!!! This story sickens me on so many levels. If the punishment for rape is castration it may stop them, maybe not. If a woman can be killed or jailed for seeking an abortion these men deserve all hell upon them.
ReplyDeleteWomen really seem to be fed up with this nonsense.
DeleteI would have thought it would improve their reputation if they're seen to take tough action on sexual violence.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely would have.
