Am I happy?

Am I happy about the midterm elections? Yes. It's a huge relief that there will once again be checks and balances in our government.  There are so many reasons I am happy. Texas makes me happy! Michigan thrills me, as do the Carolinas. We are still waiting on Mississippi and Alaska to announce their senate winners.  Mississippi blows my mind. Georgia, oh Georgia, you've finally done it. There are many firsts, there will be so much new, young blood in Congress.

But Florida, where I live, is as sinister and corrupt as ever. There were huge gains, the Florida governor and senate races were close, and everyone wants us to be happy about these things. I am happy, underneath my sorrow and disgust. But over 60% voted yes on a Florida referendum which eliminates property taxes. We already don't pay state income tax. Florida is a Republican paradise for the wealthy and selfish, but a nightmare for working folks.

Without property taxes Floridians will have more sales taxes and toll roads. There will be no state funding for the arts. Although school taxes are exempt from Amendment 3, Florida schools are already less than rigorous in this state, without future support they will become worse. Services will be eliminated. It is, as my mother would have said, a sin and a shame.

So yes, I'm happy for the U.S.A. Once again, Florida breaks my heart. However, I am a Yellow Dog Democrat and an American. We roll with the punches. We never give up.
