Ian

We are safe and sound and lucky as all get out. My heart goes out to all the people who weren't lucky. What devastation this hurricane has brought to parts of the Gulf Coast!

My husband is taking the plywood off the outside of the bedroom window and I write this. Soon I'm going to drive over to our daughter's house (about 15 minutes away) to see if they got their power back, or if they want to come and stay with us until they do. Yesterday they said no. Since I haven't heard from them today, my assumption is their power is still off and their devices have run down. Surely young N will want to spend a day watching TV and playing video games?

Their power went out for them about 11:30 pm as the storm hit Central Florida hard late Wednesday night. Ten year old N sent me a text after midnight with only one word, "Grandma." I didn’t read it when he sent it because I was asleep. Saw it about 1:30 am when I got up to check on things. Broke my heart.

    1. Thanks, Robin! M and her family have their power back now and they have replaced their fridge food, and life returns to normal for those of us who were lucky.

  3. You are such a loving and love grandmother. My heart felt your grandson's message. You and your family and all those in the path of the hurricane have been in my thoughts. Thank you for letting me know you are safe and sound.

Many years ago, I read Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neal Hurston, many years ago. There was a vivid description of a hurricane in Florida and how it affected the people living there. I've never forgotten how frightening hurricanes are. My sister was living in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, during Katrina. I saw the devastation that remained a year later. I know how traumatized my sister was. She didn't evacuate because she had 6 large dogs. She had evacuated once to Jacksonville, but found it difficult to find a motel that would take her and the dogs. She started going to church after Katrina because after she prayed that the surge would not destroy her home, the water came up to her back door and stopped there.

    1. We were so lucky. Worrying about Carol in NC right now. We have to work out when we come to see you next week.

  7. My daughter evacuated from Tampa to Orlando - feeling very blessed to have both the physical and financial ability to do so. They were high and dry where they stayed, but she did report back on all the flooding she saw as they returned home. You were very much in my thoughts and I am so glad to hear that you are safe. Sending what we can to those who lost so much.

    1. REALLY happy to hear your daughter evacuated. Orlando is usually much safer than either coast.

  8. I read the post and didn't write a comment but I didn't stop thinking about your grandson and how touching it is. I also have a ten-year-old grandson and I can understand the great concern. I'm glad to hear that everyone is okay, it is indeed a heartache for many others.

  9. A gift that will ensure they're never powerless again: an engine-driven electric generator. Chances are they'll never use it. Once the Hairy Bastard that administers Sod's Law knows they have it, he'll give up cutting off their juice. You'll have spoiled his fun.

    1. Good thoughts. But I'd be afraid they'd blow themselves up with one.

  10. The devastation on the east coast, especially Florida, is incredible. It'll take years to repair the damage and restore infrastructure. Glad to know you escaped the worst of it.

    1. Thanks. It really will take years for them to rebuild some semblance of what they once had. Crazy!

  11. Sorry to hear about your family's troubles too, and everyone in Florida all the way up to Newfoundland. Lots of friends are affected.

That "Grandma" text? Yikes! It would have broke my heart too.

    1. Yeah, I so wish I would have been awake when he sent it. He did okay, though.
