That red dress

Our grandson's wedding is still a couple of months away, but I have had no luck finding a dress I like for the rehearsal dinner.

My needs are simple.  Nothing low cut, no weird cut-outs, tea length (midi or below the knee), short sleeves, not tight fitting, not sexy, not high fashion. And I want it to be red, but I'm willing to compromise on the color.

I'm 71 years old. I want to look respectable and attractive in an old lady kind of way.  Is that too much to ask?

  1. I hear you, sister. Fewer and fewer places are out there to meet your very reasonable requirements.

  2. Be sure to show us what you decide on. It's not easy to find dresses that make a gal feel like a million dollars -- which is the least one ought to aim for. It takes a while -- too much damn shopping -- at least, in my case! -Kate

    1. I'll share a picture of the dress for sure. But only with me in it if I get a picture I like, ha! Yes, I hate shopping, too. Ick.

  3. No, that is definitely not too much to ask. I so hope you find the dress you are looking for. And I hope you'll share a photo of you wearing it. Good luck with your search.

  4. Perhaps you can find what you want in a very flared trouser style; looks like a skirt, goes on one leg at a time. Do you have many boutiques available?

    1. Not a lot of boutiques near by, unfortunately. And, of course, then I'd have to leave the house, ha!

    2. Looking at it closer I probably wouldn't order it. Care instructions say do not wash, do not dry clean, spot clean only. Good grief.

  6. Everything Old is New Again. You don't want to look respectable, you want to look great. Most shops have horrid clothes .. really ugly stuff. But 20 years ago I found a knock out blouse and skirt at Lord & Taylor I can still put on today and wow the crowd. (It was too big for me then but a few tucks and pens...) You know the cut has to be right. The color doesn't matter. A big print will catch the eye. White/Red White/Blue... lots of white wins. Wish I could send you my killer outfit and have you cut it down to size. But don't worry.. You'lll make the outfit. Grandma.. XOXO

    1. I think my grandchildren want me to look respectable, ha! Left to my own devices I would show up in jeans and a t-shirt. I actually do have my eye on one particular dress at Lord & Taylor. My bookmarks are filled with possibilities.

  7. Any local seamstresses? Have you searched on etsy.com? Sometimes I find tailors are better value. You can often pick the fabric yourself.

    1. There probably are local seamstresses, but I'm too lazy to go that route. I will look on etsy. Good idea.

  8. Your comment about the pronunciation of "schedule" raised a number of points whch I have answered and turned into a separate blog post, now awaiting your delectation at Tone Deaf.

  9. Best of luck! You will find something just right! I did wonder why it has to be a dress - pretty pants with a lovely top would be comfy and cute! And can be worn again! No bare legs or nylons to worry about... You can tell I am a lazy dresser! :)

    1. I'm considering pants. But I do so want a red dress. Ha.

  10. Jenny has very specific needs for her clothes and is often frustrated by her inability to find what she's looking for. She would never wear a red dress though - for one thing she never wears dresses.

  11. My mom always complained that as she got older it became harder and harder to find clothes. I guess that phenomenon continues!
