The Oddest Holiday

Tom got a chill on Dec 22nd. The next day he woke up feeling poorly.  By the morning of Christmas Eve, it was clear he wasn't up to celebrating.  Mostly, he had a sinus headache, runny nose, fatigue, and muscle aches. It might have been a cold, but I never got it.  That seems odd.

We'll probably never know what it was. I tried to get home testing kits for COVID, but absolutely no pharmacy had one, either in store or online. Even Amazon was sold out. On Christmas Eve I tried to schedule a drive through test and was told the soonest appointment was January 2nd.

My niece had extra kits, so she and her mother (Baby Sister) kindly sent us a kit as soon as the post office reopened, Monday, Dec 27.  It didn't arrive until December 31st.  That was 10 days after Tom first noticed symptoms. It tested negative. But now we don't know if that means it wasn't COVID, if he was no longer testing positive because it has been so long, or if it was a false negative.

Although he was never seriously ill, we had to assume it was COVID in order to behave responsibly, so we stayed home and didn't spend Christmas with our daughter or her family. I drove the gifts over (fully masked) and left them on their doorstep. They (fully masked) brought our gifts outside for me to transport back to our house. We opened presents over FaceTime.

If it was COVID, I'm so glad we got vaccinated and booster shots, because he's fine now. We went on a bike ride this morning to try and start this new year out right.

Happy New Year!

  1. We've been told in Alberta that if you get sick, assume it's Omicron. But I got sick and had a test and it came back negative. Nobody else got sick thank goodness.

Glad he's feeling better now and even though I don't like bike riding, right now, I would love to go for a bike ride. We've been caught in some horrible cold weather.

    1. Keep you eyes on the prize: Spring! I'm hoping for a better 2022 for you and yours.

  2. I'm so glad he's feeling better. That is the good news. You two did the most responsible thing, treating like it was covid and masking up even to drop off the Christmas gifts. Stay well there, both of you!

  3. Glad to hear Tom recovered from whatever it was. But, it is impossible not only to get Tested but to get the Booster here in a reasonable time frame. I've been trying to get one for the Teen Grandchild for Weeks, now her Pediatrician is squeezing her in mid-January due to her high risk factors. Seems they're making it more difficult to do what we need to do rather than easier? Our Christmas was Odd too, I think Post-Pandemic everything is Odd in one way or another. Happy New Year, may 2022 bring us out of at least some of the darkness, but, even if it doesn't, may it not steal our Joy and Happiness.

    1. It does seem like they are making it difficult. Happy New Year to you, too.

  4. What a time we live in. I am glad to read that he is well again.
He could get an antibody test to see whether this was COVID. These are tests for specific virus fragments that are only found after an infection not after vaccination.

    1. Good idea. I'll mention it to him. It would be nice to know.

  5. Well, I'm glad he came through it all OK! I suppose it doesn't really matter now if it was Covid -- as long as he's well. Kudos for being careful and not potentially exposing anyone else.

    1. It was hard to do the right thing, but then again it always is.

  6. My sister and one of my sons came down with similar symptoms but they tested negative also. Lots of regular colds and flu going around so maybe it wasn't Covid after all. Glad he is better and hope you both stay healthy! Happy New Year!

  7. Glad to know Tom recovered okay from whatever it was. A bit of a dampener for Christmas though. There's a huge shortage of testing kits in the UK too.

    1. It was still a nice Christmas, but we missed the grandkids.

  8. We went through this as well. sore throat, fatigue, feeling jsut off you know? But no covid tests and I hear that most home kits do not tell you if you got the omicron test. So there is that. Thankfully we're vaxxed and boosted so it went away quickly. Glad you are well too.

  9. I fantasize. Had we known you were on your own we could have wished you well - via Skype - from our noisy household, toasting you in phenomenally expensive Bordeaux. Made use of the technology which Puck (in Midsummer Night's Dream) presciently alludes to:

I breathe the air before you and return,
Or e'er your heart twice beat.

The Old World greeting the New. While getting in a dollop of literature.

  10. I hope that it was COVID and that he know has antibodies with large muscles. They're in there flexing for each other, arguing which one will knock out the next attempt at getting in.
